The horror genre has always made efforts to reflect the biggest fears and humor of society. The slashers of the 70s and 80s reflected the fears of premarital sex and realistic, gruesome murders following a surge of violent crimes at the time, while early horror reflected the fears of folklore and religion. Scream and a lot of 2000’s horror are also great examples of horror’s attempts to capitalize on the humor of the era.
As our society continues to advance technologically, we have seen a major rise in A.I. and android horror/thriller with movies like Ex Machina and even The Terminator. Recently, a new movie trailer was released for a film titled M3GAN.
The trailer for M3GAN introduces a recently orphaned Cady who is sent to live with her aunt Gemma, a roboticist. Gemma’s newest creation, M3GAN, is an A.I. doll that befriends Cady and starts to act increasingly territorial towards Cady. Throughout the trailer, we watch M3GAN become extremely violent towards people who threaten the happiness of Cady and even bust out some pretty crazy dance moves that Cady presumably taught her.
M3GAN’s trailer took the internet, specifically Twitter, by storm. In contrast to the more serious and scary plot, M3GAN’s dance moves and flips add quite the silly twist. The odd and seemingly out of place choreography to Taylor Swift’s "It's Nice to Have a Friend" could be interpreted as silly appeal to the humor of the generation and social media.
While M3GAN definitely reflects the fears of A.I. possibly “replacing” traditional parenting and companionship in the future, the weird and epic dance moves really steal the show and sell the movie to the viewer.
